Hongkong, 5th. June, 1905.
Your letter of today to hand contents of
which have been duly noted. In compliance with your request I
beg herewith to state as accurately as I can remember, what oc-
-curred on the night you refer to.
At about 10 P.M. Sister Alleway informed
me that you had left instructions for Dr. Laing to be called at
1 A.M. to attend a patient in the Maternity Hospital; at about
12.30 A.M. Sister Allaway asked me to ring up Dr. Laing as it
was then time to perform an operation on the patient referred to.
After many unsuccessful attempts I decided to send the receiving
room boy to the Doctor's Quarters; he returned at about 1 A.M.
and told me that the combined efforts of himself and Dr. Laing's
boy were of no avail. At this time the Sister had left me and
gone to the Maternity Hospital. Thereon, not knowing what was
the matter with the patient I called Sister Young and enquired
whether the case was one that required a Medical Officer's at-
-tention, she went over to see and returned accompanied by
Sister Allaway. As they were unanimous on the point I made
another attempt to attract Dr. Laing's attention on the tele-
-phone, and being again unsuccessful, I sent the boy over a
second time, who, when he returned said that if I rang up then
I would get the Dr.
When I did get an answer it was to the
effect that there were some men in the room, and he was trying
to get them out, and please to tell the Sister he would be over
directly. As it was then 1.35 A.M. 1 probably got excited, and
told
Dr. Bell, Supt. Govt.Civil Hospital.
